Press Conference on 16 days of Activism (25.11.2012)

This year on the 26th of November Women’s Rights Center has held a press conference on 16-days of activism in “Yelaket” press club. It was noted, that each year the world gathers more momentum on “16-days of Activism against Gender Violence”  campaign  in the scope of which various types of activities are also going to be held from the 25th of November to the 10th of December. This year Women’s Rights Center is also commences a series of events dedicated to the 16- days of activism, specifically, various type activities are designed to be implemented on the 25th of November on International Day Against Violence Against Women, on 29th of November on International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, on 6th of December on the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, on 10th of December on International Human Rights Day.

More than 3700 organizations from 164 countries beginning from 1991, take part in annual world “16 – Days of Activism Against Gender Violence” campaign, claiming to eliminate all types of violence against women. First time the campaign was commenced in 2000 in Caucasus region.

Every year the world theme and slogan of campaign is being developed by consultation with women rights advocates. The slogan for 2012 is “Peace at Home, Peace in the World- Let’s Struggle against Militarism and Stop the Violence against Women”.

It is worth to mention, that the campaign commenced in the 20th century is based on two historical events. The first took place on the 25th of November, 1960 in Dominican Republic, when the state authorities brutally executed the three of four Mirabal sisters the political activists, who became the symbol of resistance against the Truhilyoy regime. The second one took place on the 6th of December, 1989 in Canada, when a 25-year-old young man named Mark Lepin killed 14 students of the Engineering Department of Montreal University. The murderer was sure, that the reason, that he was not admitted to the university was the number of the female students.

These inhuman acts provided the bases for the two world campaigns: “16-Days of Activisms against Gender Violence” and “The White Ribbon Campaign”, which had not procedure and was held by the initiative of Canadian men. Later, in 1999, the United Nations officially proclaimed the 25th of November as International Day against Violence against Women. The 16-day campaign commences with that day and lasts till the 10th of December International Human Rights Day.

Afterwards, Susanna Vardanyan, the director of Women’s Rights Center, turned to the Law on Domestic Violence and noted, that the development of the law was commenced in 2007 and it was ready in 2009. It was also noted, that the law was circulated several times and there have been made some changes in the law.

It was mentioned, that the law was a completely new one, and at the beginning it was discussed whether there was a need for the Law on Domestic Violence, as there were different laws touching upon the violence, but at the end they were assured, that there were some difference between domestic violence and violence in other sectors.
